WELCOME TO HORSE & JOCKEY.

WELCOME TO HORSE & JOCKEY.

Here’s to new beginnings for this iconic venue. Newly operated by the team behind The Black Friar in Salford, we plan to reopen our doors as Chorlton’s first ever Gastropub in late October 2025. Respecting the heritage and history of this iconic building, expect to see highlighted original features, stripped back decor, heritage colours and cosy furnishings.

We’re excited to transform the pub into a real foodie destination – introducing an ever-changing menu focusing on fresh local ingredients. Lovers of Joseph Holt ales will still be able to enjoy a selection of their award-winning beers, joined by a curated wine list designed for food pairing, a brand-new cocktail menu and tasty new bar snacks.

A LITTLE HISTORY...

A LITTLE HISTORY...

This 500-year old building has become a symbol of Chorlton Green, undergoing several iterations over its lifetime. It’s been claimed that the Horse & Jockey dates from 1512, but little if any of the present building is as old as that. The building may have already been in its second decade when Henry VIII walked up the aisle with Anne Boleyn, but it didn’t become a pub until 1793! The iconic black and white Tudor frontage was added sometime in the early 1900s.

Chorlton has historically been a popular drinking area, as today. If the walls could talk we’d hear everything from village fêtes to annual Easter ceremonies to darker histories… local death inquests were regularly held here, and Victorian patrons were known to use the bar to save for their own funerals. It’s said the building is still haunted today…

MEET THE TEAM.

MEET THE TEAM.

After four years running the successful Black Friar in Salford, owner Neil Burke and Executive Chef Ben Chaplin bring their expert eye to the suburbs. Neil Burke acquired The Black Friar two years ago after successfully operating the venue since 2021. The Grade II listed building was saved from development after sitting derelict for over 15 years, becoming a well-loved venue by neighbours and destination diners alike and one of the only independently owned Pubs in the city centre.

Neil and Ben are chomping at the bit to get the Horse and Jockey living up to its full potential, aiming to create a pub that heavily focuses on great British produce in a beautiful environment. Horse and Jockey will be a place where everyone is welcome – whether they’re popping in for a pint, having a roast after a leisurely Sunday walk, or throwing a bash to celebrate a milestone.
